This beautifully preserved colonial city in central Guatemala was once the capital of the Central American country. It is mostly known for its Spanish-influenced architecture and close proximity to some of Guatemala’s most impressive volcanoes.
First off, the sights your eyes will stumble upon during your time in Antigua are almost too good to be true. Everywhere you look, there seems to be a volcano or a mountain towering above gorgeous colourful buildings. It is one of the most picturesque cities we have ever been to.
There are beautiful and affordable hostels to relax at all throughout the city center (we stayed at Somos and absolutely loved it). If you’re looking for a bit of a workout and adventure, try the incredible two day Acatenango volcano trekking with Wicho & Charlie.

To be honest, we didn’t have the best experience getting to Guatemala. So we headed to Antigua with little to no expectations.
A little tip: unless you’re travelling on a shoestring budget and counting every penny, avoid the chicken busses at all costs! For the extra 10-20$, the organised shuttle busses will bring you to Antigua in half the time and you’ll feel a lot safer.
Finally, although we only spent three full days here, it ended up being one of our favorite cities we visited in Central America. The culture, the quaint cobble stone streets and the surrounding landscape make it a must on any trip to Guatemala incomplete without a stop here
